To date, it has not been possible to undertake a full three-dimensional (3D) structure and chemical characterization of the topmost atomic layers of electrocatalysts. Atom probe tomography (APT) provides uniquely powerful insights into the atomic-scale chemistry and structure of materials. The aim of this project is to provide fundamental insights into the interplay of composition, structure of active species, catalytic activity of spinel-type oxide by using APT and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). This project will provide new experimental evidence on the surface species during oxygen evolution reaction for water electrolysis, thereby elucidating the role of the composition and defect structure in the OER activity and stability. This PhD is a part of collaborative research projects (SFB TRR247, „Heterogeneous Oxidation Catalysis in the Liquid Phase“) between Ruhr University Bochum, University of Duisburg-Essen, MPI for Chemical Energy Conversion and Fritz Haber Institute. Within the subproject „Identifying Composition-Processing-Defect-Structure-Property Correlations in Continuous (La-Sr-)Fe-Co-O Thin Film Composition Spreads“ the candidate will cooperate with another PhD student, working on synthesis and characterization of thin film materials libraries.

He or she will have access to world-class set of laboratories and more than 10 major microscopy platforms, including the state-of-the-art atom probe, aberration-corrected TEM, focused ion beam etc.
If the position is funded by third-party funds the employee has no teaching obligation. Travel expenses for interviews cannot be refunded. • an excellent master degree in materials science, inorganic chemistry, or electrochemistry

The candidate may have:
• a good knowledge of materials or chemistry characterisation techniques
• had experiences in operating cyclic voltammetry to study electrochemical reactions
• had a good knowledge of the crystallographic structure
